B.A.P. Says They Owe Their New Musical Direction To Their Eye-Opening Experiences On Tour

According to B.A.P. band member Young Yae, the band's extensive performing experience can be credited for their rapid creative development.

Although their first album came out just last year, six-man South Korean Hip Hop Group B.A.P. has already reinvented themselves with a hard new sound and an edgy new look on their third EP “Badman,” released August 6, and the accompanying music video for the title song.

According to B.A.P. band member Young Yae, the band’s extensive performing experience can be credited for their rapid creative development.

“We learned a lot in our tour,” Young told the publication eNEWS.

“Since our eyes and ears were opened wide, we naturally came to pursue higher quality in our music. We tried to include that inspiration and everything experimental in our album. We believe those who listen to ‘Badman’ will definitely get to see how much we’ve grown.”

Written by the group’s consistent collaborators Kang Ji Won and Kim Ki Bum, “Badman” grew out of B.A.P. frontman Bang Yong Guk’s desire to confront the forgotten crimes of the past in a song.

“Society was shaken with crimes that made big issues, but at one point those crimes were forgotten,” Bang said.

“They′re really serious incidents that society needs to learn from, but they′re all forgotten so easily. I wanted to draw attention to what′s happening and convey a message to criminals out there.”

According to B.A.P. member Him Chan the whole “Badman” album allowed the band to experiment with new musical styles in an attempt push K-pop into places it has never gone before.

“We had many opportunities to show how B.A.P could be a true artist,” Him said.

“It was interesting how we reinterpreted the genre of jazz, which no idol has ever tried before. We′re really attached to this album because it′s our first self-produced piece and it also shows each member′s strong characteristics. Listeners will be able to meet lots of different genres and it won′t feel boring.”

And although it is debatable whether jazz is truly new territory for K-pop (with her swinging 2013 single “Miss Korea,” Lee Hyori may for one, disagree with that statement), there is no denying that B.A.P. brings something new both sonically and visually to the genre.

And while Him may be boastful about his band, the musician’s modesty was more than apparent when the topic of B.A.P.’s charity efforts were brought up.

“It′s great that we′re being called idols with a right mind,” Him said.

“We′re embarrassed because we just did what would be right for anyone. We′re not great people, but we do feel we′re at a status where we can influence others. We hope our influence moves everyone in a positive direction and has everyone act under the right values.”

Having trouble keeping up with your favorite K-Pop idols, B.A.P?Never fear – here is a recap of their activities for the past week.

Badman reached the number one spot on the Billboard World Albums chart, giving B.A.P international recognition for their hard work and strong comeback.

The group finally finished up their Live On Earth Tour with a final set of performances in Seoul this weekend, but that does not mean they have taken any time to rest.

The B.A.P members are still going strong with their “Badman” promotions and they had a variety of TV and radio appearances this week.

They had a stellar performances on the various music shows over the weekend, particularly Sunday’s episode of Inkigayo – tearing up the studios with dramatic dance moves and a masculine stage presence.

They also went on Arirang’s After School Club on August 14 and appeared on Shindong’s ShimShimTaPa radio show as well.

Also, in preparation for their Japanese debut in October, B.A.P launched their official fan club in the country, BABY JAPAN, posting a welcome video online with a message for fans.

They are also planning a Japan dome tour beginning in November and on August 19 pre-sale tickets will go on sale for BABY JAPAN members only.

My Korea, Your Words: Food

While many will say that Korea is great for music, sights, and shopping, the nation is equally fantastic for satisfying taste buds. This week, I turn to this delicious topic as I share my Korea in your words.

The truth of the matter is this video was incredibly hard to make. It’s possible to make an hour-long show just on street food alone, so trying to sift through the comments from readers and viewers to make a short, concise, and meaningful video was challenging. The final video (below) not only reflects the suggestions of what foods to include in the video, but also the experiences of eating them and accompanying emotions.

The video opens with one of my favorite Korean foods: pajeon (파전). This green onion pancake is probably one of the best foods in the nation – not only because it tastes fantastic, but also because it’s meant to be shared – as with most of Korean food. I chose this scene because when I think of eating pajeon, I always think about eating it after a long hike. In this clip, we see the hands of a talented ajumma (older woman) making haemul pajeon (seafood) on Seorak Mountain.

When talking about Korean food, to many the first word that comes to mind is spicy. In fact, when speaking with many of my Korean friends, they routinely ask me if Korean food is too spicy for my palate. It isn’t and one of my favorites is tteokbokki (떡볶이). These soft, chewy rice cakes smothered in red-hot red pepper sauce. What better way to heat up the body than from the inside on a cold, winter’s day?

Another aspect of Korean food is its glorious presentation. What’s the most important meal of the day? Breakfast. What looks amazing on a table? A full Korean breakfast. It’s much more than just rice and kimchi (although they are present). On the table are an assortment of greens, cucumber soup (oi naengguk), and grilled fish.

However, if you ask the average person off the street about Korean food, they will typically respond with kimchi and Korean barbecue. That’s exactly what appears next. After marinating thinly cut strips of meat, it’s time to grill them on the tabletop stove. Wrap them up in lettuce leaves and pop them it in your mouth. Your stomach will thank you.

Korean food is a collection of flavors. While a number of dishes exemplify this, budae jjigae (부대찌개) is probably one of the more unique to do so. Originating in the surroundings of Uijeongbu, this dish is probably Korea’s most famous fusion of ingredients.

While not an indigenous food of Korea, anyone who has ever tried the nation’s take on fried chicken will tell you hands down it’s the best. How can any Korean food video not include some variety of fried chicken?

Another staple of the Korean diet is the gimbap (김밥). This rolled snack is a favorite of many and the perfect thing to take on the go when hiking or picnicking. While we’re speaking of a rice-based dish, kimchi bokeumbap, or kimchi fried rice, is great as a snack or as a meal. Especially when topped with a fried egg.

Korean’s are famous for tying one on at night. Their all-night parties are the stuff of legend. Unfortunately, that often means the following morning isn’t pleasant. However, a quick trip to many restaurants has the cure – haejangguk, or hangover soup. While there are a number of varieties made across the region, I’m partial to those with beef or pork mixed in.

Ultimately, Korean food is best enjoyed with friends. Across the nation you’ll find many fine dining establishments, but to have the most fun eating, head down to the local market, pull up a stool, and eat & drink the night away.

National Flower Becomes Hard to Find in Korea
It is growing increasingly difficult to find Korea's national flower mugunghwa or rose of Sharon here. The Chosun Ilbo asked 200 people when they had last seen the flower, and 62 percent said they do not remember. Only 18.5 percent said they saw it less than a week ago, while 19.5 percent said within the last month. "I only saw the mugunghwa in textbooks when I was a student but rarely in reality", said a university student.The mugunghwa is also dropping in rank among people's favorite flower. B.A.P’s Live on Earth concert in Singapore was full of power-packed performances and sweet surprises. The concert’s concept was truly interesting especially the segment where the unique features of each member were introduced via a “body scan”.

Sounds unbelievable that a rapper can sing too? Well, leader Bang Yong Guk was precisely given the nickname of a singing rapper! He proved so as he sang and danced to their labelmate SECRET’s Yoo Hoo, displaying his ability of being an all-rounder.

Next member, Him Chan was highlighted as one who mimics Bang Yong Guk, so he mimicked Yong Guk’s style of rapping. It sounded quite alike at first, but when he did it again after Yong Guk did his original version, Him Chan seemed to become embarrassed and laughed to himself.

Dae Hyun, supposedly the main vocalist of the group, surprised fans when he rapped Zelo’s lines in Warrior with the speed of lightning. Young Jae proved that he was a sexy vocalist by doing sexy dance moves, putting his hips into good use.

Jong Up did a cool dance too as he showed himself as one with genius dancing skills. Zelo, the youngest member with aegyo, cutely did his own version of Gwiyomi Player while hitting his butt. Not losing out, leader Yongguk also did the Gwiyomi Player, showing the cute side of him instead of just being a cool and handsome leader.
Other interesting facts included Yong Guk with a gummy smile, Him Chan who counts calories, Dae Hyun who was named a good and motherly member, Young Jae the nailbiter, Jong Up who has remarkable six-pack and Zelo who is in charge of laundry in their dorm.

There was no translator for the night’s concert, but B.A.P’s effort was commendable as they were still able to converse and interact with the fans. From short English phrases to English songs such as Dae Hyun and Young Jae’s duet ‘I Believe I Can Fly’, B.A.P has evidently put in much effort to make the night understandable and enjoyable. The 6-member group also performed their popular tracks like ‘Warrior’, ‘Power’ and ‘No Mercy’.

With a perfect combination of a green sea of Matoki lightsticks and a neat blowing of whistles, the audience surely made it a memorable night for both B.A.P and themselves. It was a pity their comeback song ‘Badman’ was not performed, nontheless the power-packed night left fans on an adrenaline high.
